About Enterprise, Oregon

Enterprise is a city in, and the county seat of, Wallowa County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,895.

History

Enterprise received its name as the result of a vote at a community meeting held in a tent in 1887. The tent was owned by a mercantile company. The city was incorporated in 1889.

Geography

Enterprise is located at 45°25'27" North, 117°16'37" West (45.424259, -117.277066).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 miles. All 1.5 miles of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,895 people, 821 households, and 522 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,289.7/mi. There are 952 housing units at an average density of 647.9/mi. The racial makeup of the city is 96.46% White, 0.05% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 821 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,429, and the median income for a family is $39,338. Males have a median income of $29,688 versus $22,232 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,755. 11.3% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.6% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
